Technical Service Bulletins are documents provided by product manufacturers that contain information about a variety of subjects, including: Manufacturers provide this information to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), where the TSBs are stored in a database. TSBs include information about the following product types: You can search the NHTSA database for TSBs using one of the following methods:

Performing a Quick Search

Use the following procedure to search the database for all Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) associated with a NHTSA campaign number:
  1. Enter the NHTSA item number in the NHTSA Item Number field.
  2. Press Search. If there are TSBs associated with the campaign number you specified, the Search Results page appears.

    If your search does not find any TSBs, the following message appears:

  3. To begin a new search, click on the New Search button.

Performing a Product Type Search

Use the following procedure to search the database for Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) related to a specific product type:
  1. Select one of the following product types from the Select Type of Search field:

    NOTE: If at any point in the following steps the item that you are interested in is not listed in the dropdown list box selections, then there are no TSBs associated with that item in the database.

  2. Press Search Selected Type to search the database for TSBs associated with the product type you selected. If you selected Vehicle as the product type, the Year tab appears. The product type you selected appears on the tab. If you selected one of the other product types, go to step 4.
  3. Select the appropriate year for the vehicle from the list box in the Year field. If you do not know the year, select 9999. Press Submit Year.

    NOTE: The number 9999 only appears in the Year list box if there are technical service bulletins in the database that are associated with that number.

  4. The Make tab is activated. If you selected Tires as the product type, the tab and field name change to Brand Name. The selections you made previously appear.
  5. Select the product make/tire brand name from the list box in the Make/Brand Name field and press Submit Make/Submit Brand Name. If you selected 9999 in the Year field and you do not know the product make, you must select UNKNOWN in this field. The Model tab is activated. For Tires, the tab and field name change to Tire Line. The selections you made previously appear.
  6. Select the appropriate model/tire line from the list box in the Model/Tire Line field and press Submit Model/Submit Tire Line. If you selected UNKNOWN in the previous field, you must select UNKNOWN in this field. If you press Submit without selecting a model/tire line, a message box appears. You cannot continue without making a selection. The Component tab is activated. The selections you made previously appear.
  7. Select the product component from the list box in the Component field. Selecting a product component is optional. The options that appear in the list box are determined by the product make/brand name and model/tire line that you selected.

    NOTE: Press the Clear Entry button on the Year, Make/Brand Name, Model/Tire Line, or Component tabs to make a different selection.

  8. Select the checkbox that appears on the Component tab if you want to include document summaries for the TSBs on the Search Results page. If you do not select this checkbox, you will be able to view the document summary for each TSB by clicking on the Get Summary link. For more information, see Viewing Search Results.
  9. Press the Retrieve Service Bulletins button. All TSBs associated with the product type, model year, make/brand name, model/tire line, and component you specified appear on the Search Results page.

Viewing the Search Results

The Results field appears at the top of the Search Results page. It displays the number of records that were found that match your search criteria. The application displays 15 records at a time. If there are more than 15 records, the First, Prev, Next, and Last links appear at the top and the bottom of the Search Results page. The following table describes the fields on the Search Results page:

FIELD NAME DESCRIPTION
Report Date Displays the date and time that you initiated your database search.
Search Type Displays the product type that you selected.
Year Displays the vehicle model year. This field only appears if you selected Vehicle as the product type. It appears twice on the page.
Make/Brand Name Displays the product make/tire brand name that you selected. This field appears twice on the page.
Model/Tire Line Displays the product model/tire line that you selected. This field appears twice on the page.
Manufacturer Displays the manufacturer's name.
Service Bulletin Num Displays the manufacturer's identification number for the technical service bulletin.
Date of Bulletin Displays the date that the bulletin was issued.
NHTSA Item Number Displays the NHTSA item number for the technical service bulletin.
Component Displays the component name.
Summary Displays a brief description of the Technical Service Bulletin. This field only appears if you specified that the document summary for each TSB appears on the Search Results page. If you did not select this checkbox, a Get Summary link appears for each entry. When you click on the link, the document summary appears in a pop-up window.

A checkbox appears after each entry in the Search Results list. Select it to request more information for a specific TSB. You can order more than one TSB at a time. Press the Request Research button to submit your request.

The following table describes the buttons contained on the Search Results page:

BUTTON DESCRIPTION
Press the New Search button to create a new search query. Enables you to create a new search query.
Press the Print Results button to print your search results. Links to a printable version of the Search Results page.
Click the Document Search button to search the repository for related documents. Searches the repository for documents related to a particular TSB. For more information, see Viewing Repository Documents.
Press the Order Research button to submit your document order. Submits your document request. For more information, see Requesting Documents.

Viewing Repository Documents

When the Search Results page appears, the Document Search button appears after each entry on the page that has at least one associated document. The Document Search button enables you to search the repository for documents that are related to the TSB listed on the Search Results page. Use the following procedure to view the repository documents:
  1. Click the Document Search button for a particular entry on the Search Results page. The application searches the repository for documents related to the particular TSB and a pop-up window similar to the following appears:

  2. Click on the document link. The document appears in a separate window. You can then view the document, print it, or save it to your local drive.
