Summary:
On March 31, 1998, the General Motors Corporation (GM) filed a Defect Information Report to NHTSA for the recall of 55,154 minivans built from August through October 1997 and equipped with traction control because of the potential for brake failure. The brake line to the traction control system modulator valve can contact the wiper arm linkage. The contact wears through the brake line resulting in a leak, loss of brake effectiveness, and extended stopping distances. Dealers were to inspect and repair any damaged brake lines, and to install a clip to reposition the brake line away from wiper linkage. The vehicles included in the recall are late production 1997 and early production 1998 model year Oldsmobile Silhouette, Chevrolet Venture, and the Pontiac Trans Sport minivans. NHTSA recall 98V-072, GM 98014. The purpose of this investigation is to ascertain whether the scope of recall 98V-072 was correct and whether the 1997-98 models not included in that recall, as well as the 1999 models, should be recalled.
