Ten of these incidents were reported to have resulted in a loss of vehicler control. Additionally, 27 reports have been received which allege failure of the steering gear rack and pinion unit, including five which resulted in a loss of vehicle control. No vehicle crashes were reported, but the failures are of concern in that they may pose a compromise to steering control. A prelimiary evaluation has been opened on this issue.
